Brust und Körperwärme schaukeln das Baby in den Schlaf
Kann ein Kuscheltier oder eine Nachtflasche dem Baby die nötige Geborgenheit bieten?

12 Uhr in der Nacht nach einem langen und anstrengenden Tag, man will nur noch eines: einen erholsamen und tiefen Schlaf. Doch dann beginnt das Abendkonzert des Babys. Wenn man sich entschieden hat, Mutter zu werden, hat man einen Vertrag abgeschlossen, der einem selber nur mehr wenig Zeit lässt, ein paar Stunden Schlaf müssen ausreichen und das Erste und Letzte, was man zu tun hat, ist, sich um das Kind zu kümmern. Gerne wird werdenden Müttern eingetrichtert, sie könnten ab sofort ihr bisheriges Leben komplett vergessen, denn die ganze Zeit ginge für den kleinen Schützling drauf.

Doch kaum ist das Kind auf der Welt, erkennt jede Mutter, was sie dabei gewinnt: sein Lächeln, seinen ruhigen Schlaf, wenn er dein Gesicht erkennt und dich voller Freude und Erwartung anschaut. Dann spielen all die Dinge, die vorher noch wichtig waren, plötzlich keine Rolle mehr. Ja, man hat wenig Schlaf als junge Mutter, doch es reicht dann doch. Manchmal weckt mein Sohn mich alle fünf Minuten, weil er Hunger hat, obwohl er selbst so müde ist, dass er sofort wieder zurück ins Land der Träume sinkt. Doch mich dadurch belästigt zu fühlen, fiele mir nicht ein.

Babys haben noch kein ausgeprägtes Gefühl, wann Tag und wann Nacht ist. Trotzdem fragt man sich, wie viel Schlaf ein Baby braucht, wie man es schafft, dass sich das Kind auf einen Tag- und Nachtrhythmus umstellt, oder ob das automatisch passiert. Keinesfalls sollte man, wie es früher noch oft gemacht wurde, das Kind tagsüber bewusst wach halten, damit es am Abend müde und erschöpft in die Kissen fällt, denn dann hat man aufgrund des unzufriedenen Geschreis den ganzen Tag über auch keine Freude.

Wenn man sich auf die Suche nach Informationen über den Schlaf eines Babys begibt, findet man sehr viele Ratschläge, die zum Teil tatsächlich gut und nützlich, zum Teil aber auch haarsträubend sind. Baby stellen sich bereits im Bauch der Mutter auf ihren Tagesrhythmus ein. Dieser wird, abgesehen von den Momenten, wo sie hungrig sind, was alle drei bis vier Stunden der Fall ist, beibehalten. Abhängig vom Alter braucht das Baby 15 bis 20 Stunden Schlaf, doch das kann von Kind zu Kind sehr unterschiedlich sein.

Neugeborenen kennen noch keinen Tiefschlaf, erst ab etwa 3 Monaten kommt es dazu. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt schlafen die Kinder auch länger nachts als tagsüber, ab dem sechsten Lebensmonat sogar bis zu elf Stunden.

Ratschläge, wie etwa, dass man ein Kind nicht gleich, nachdem es von alleine aufgewacht ist, auf den Arm nehmen soll, muss man aber ignorieren. Babys brauchen Körperwärme und Geborgenheit, und die sollen sie von ihrer Mutter bekommen.

Weiters wird angeraten, Kindern ein Kuscheltier oder ein Nachtfläschchen ins Bett zu legen. Können Sie sich vorstellen, dass ein solches kalte Ding aus Plüsch oder sogar Gummi den Körper der Mutter oder ihre Brust ersetzen kann? Wohl kaum. Das Baby sehnt sich nach Geborgenheit und nach Körperwärme, es will seine Mutter spüren, erfährt aber nur Ablehung und wird mit leblosen Gegenständen „getröstet“.

Weil man keine Gefühle seinem Kind gegenüber hat? Das ist doch, was sowohl Mutter wie Kind wollen. Es liegt in der Natur des Menschen, Wärme und Geborgenheit zu geben. Wichtiger als alle Ratschläge ist das eigene Bauchgefühl. Mein Kind schläft in meinem Bett und ich stehe so oft wie nötig auf, um es zu stillen, oder einfach nur im Arm zu halten und im Zimmer im Kreis zu gehen, um ihm die nötige Geborgenheit zu bieten, damit es sich beruhigen kann, egal um welche Zeit.

Die Mutter-Kind-Bindung steht im Vordergrund, und kein Druck durch Tipps und Tricks oder gesellschaftliche Normen sollte uns vorschreiben, wie wir mit dem eigenen Kind umzugehen haben. Es gab eine Zeit, in der Kleinkinder einfach fest gewickelt und an die Wand gehängt wurden, wo ihnen nichts passierte und die Mutter sich anders beschäftigen konnte. So war es von der Gesellschaft vorgesehen, das galt als die richtige Vorgehensweise. Und doch käme heute wohl kaum noch eine Mutter darauf, es so zu tun. Also können wir uns auch getrost von den heutigen Richtlinien lösen und selber entscheiden.
